What is Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)?

Amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye, is the condition noted by reduced vision not correctable by glasses or contact lenses and is not due to any eye disease. The brain, for some reason, does not fully acknowledge the images seen by the amblyopic eye. This almost always affects only one eye but may manifest with reduction of vision in both eyes. It is estimated that three percent of children under six have some form of amblyopia.

Causes of Lazy Eye

Anything that interferes with clear vision in either during the critical period (birth to 6 yrs of age) can cause amblyopis. The most common causes of amblyopia are constant strabismus (constant turn of one eye), anisometropia (different vision/ prescriptions in each eye), and/or blockage of an eye due to cataract, trauma, lid droop, etc.

Amblyopia is a neurologically active process. In other words, the loss of vision takes place in the brain. If one sees clearly and the other sees a blur, the brain can inhibit (block, ignore, suppress) the eye with the blur. The brain can also suppress one eye to avoid double vision. The inhibition process (suppression) can result in a permanent decrease in the vision in the blurry eye that can not be corrected with glasses, lenses or lasik surgery.

Yesterday was Iklil's third appointment with an eye expert. After gone through some procedure, the doctor said that Iklil must wear spectacle to avoid her eye gettin worse. Her astigmatism was 1.50 for right eye and 1.75 for the left eye. I felt very sorry for Iklil. She's only 3 yrs old.The doctor said to avoid the power from increasing, Iklil should wear spectacle starting from today until her next appointment which is August 28. The next appointment will decide whether Iklil's Lazy Eyes had improve by wearing the spectacle or she still need to rely on the glasses.

I'm not satisfied with the doctor's decision. I remember the doctor saying that lazy eye had several stages. If the condition is not so serious, there's no need for the children to wear spectacle. Parents can follow some methods in guiding the children with lazy eyes so that the children can focus correctly.

Therefor, i decided to try another hospital. I made an appointment for Iklil at the Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital.

Tonite, i teach Iklil to wear eye patch. It was hard. At first, she refuse to wear the eye patch. She was afraid that she will get hurt by wearing the eye patch. To make her wear it, I myself had to wear the eye patch and make it look so much fun. Then only she wanted to wear the eye patch. But the eye patch that her father bought was quite big. Tommorrow i'm gonna find a new one. A cute little one that fix to her eye. Tonite, Iklil sleep like a baby with an eye patch on her right eye.

For those who had little kids, take care of them carefully. Don't take things for granted. We will not know what will happen due to our lack of supervision. Sometimes the consequences will take place in the future.
